Monday November 29 @ 8pm - Monday December 6 @ 8pm.
Formula Renault 2.0 at the Hungaroring: I ended up skipping this final week of the season, with too many real-life family activities leaving me without enough time to practice on track.
Monday November 22 @ 8pm - Monday November 29 @ 8pm.
Formula Renault 2.0 at Hockenheim: I should have done really well here, but I was wrecked twice by other drivers in my two attempts, and didn't get a chance to run the race again later. In the race shown in the video, I got a quick repair after the lap 1 crash, and finished the race on the lead lap. The video is worth watching for the first lap, and then from about 12:20-13:50. [Video]
Monday November 15 @ 8pm - Monday November 22 @ 8pm.
Formula Renault 2.0 at Silverstone: I started on the pole for this race, and then ran in second place for the entire race. Once we settled down to racing after the first lap, I kept pace pretty well with the leader, staying about 2 seconds behind him until lap 9 when I caught a couple of lapped cars who were racing one another and (reasonably) did not want to pull over and let me pass (since for them that would have meant surrendering in their own race). [Video]
Monday November 8 @ 8pm - Monday November 15 @ 8pm.
Formula Renault 2.0 at Long Beach: After getting wrecked twice in my first attempts at Long Beach, I at last got a clean race, finishing 3rd behind two drivers who were much faster than me. [Video]
Monday November 1 @ 8pm - Monday November 8 @ 8pm.
Formula Renault 2.0 at Okayama: This was another race in which mostly nothing happened. Okayama is a track that many iRacers know, because it is a "free" track (everyone has access to it as soon as they join) and many people race on it as part of getting out of the "Rookie" class. But it's never been among my favorites. In this race, I started 3rd on the grid, popped the clutch a little too quickly at the start and spun the back wheels, and lost a bunch of positions. But I mostly got them back, and finished 4th, which was about where I belonged. I lost a lot of time to the car ahead of me in the first half of the race because I got shin cramps in my braking leg and couldn't get on the brakes properly; once I got through that things got better and I kept pace with P3 for a lot of the second half. [Video]
Monday October 25 @ 8pm - Monday November 1 @ 8pm.
Formula Renault 2.0 at Monza: We ran an unusual configuration of this track, with no chicanes. You ran the car flat out (with your throttle foot on the floor) for a full 45 seconds from the Parabolica (the last corner on the track) all the way to the two right-hand turns called the Curve di Lesmo. When drivers kept their cars on the track, there was some terrific racing because of the drafting on that long stretch. But something about a simple track often brings out the worst in iRacers, and by the end of this week drivers were cursing both the track and one another for all of the damage suffered (mainly to ratings; the cars are all pretend of course). One driver made this nice video of a bunch of crashes that happened in a single race! (That is not the race I was in.) My race here was boring, which was fine -- I started 3rd and got ahead of the second-place car on the grid by the time we had to brake for the first curve, and then stayed in 2nd place for the entire race. The first place driver had run the race many times and pretty consistently gained 0.2-0.3 seconds on me through the Lesmo Curves. [Video]
Monday October 18 @ 8pm - Monday October 25 @ 8pm.
Formula Renault 2.0 at Mid-Ohio: This is only the second race that my brother and I have ever been in together. He started 3rd on the grid and I was right next to him starting 4th, and we ended up finishing in those positions. At the end of lap 7, a car ahead of me spun approaching the carousel, and I went off track through the grass to avoid it; the driver behind me tried to go left instead of right and ended up crashing into the stopped car. I would like to have done better here, and I may try it again sometime later in the week. [Video]
Monday October 11 @ 8pm - Monday October 18 @ 8pm.
Formula Renault 2.0 at Barcelona: This is a good track for working on your driving skills -- there aren't any oddball turns here, it's very clear how you should drive the track, it's simply a matter of consistently executing the motions. Unfortunately, I didn't -- on lap 2 I overcooked things going into the big loopy turn 12 and fell from 3rd to 4th place, and then on lap 3 I missed the brake point into the hairpin turn 5 and went off track and lost another 3 spots. I ended up finishing 5th after starting 2nd. [Video]
Indy Pro at Detroit: This was a fantastic race for me, I had fun in this one, starting 6th as the 8th-ranked car and finishing 3rd. Detroit is a challenging, rough (bumpy) street course, where small mistakes usually run you into a concrete wall and damage your car enough that your race is over. In fact, only 5 of the 21 cars in the field for this race completed all 21 laps -- 6 cars ahead of me had incidents that forced them to leave the race and go for repairs, and for most of the second half of the race I was running in 2nd place. I finished 3rd when the car right behind me got a nice run off turn 2 on the final lap and drew even with me down the long straight heading into turn 3. But all in all, this was a great race for me. [Video]
ARCA at Dover: This was my first time driving this track, and I was well off the pace of the top drivers. I managed tires pretty well though, and passed a few people toward the end. At the very end of the race, an incident at the front of the field took out 7 of the top 8 cars in a big crash (shown in a replay at the end of my video of the race), and as a result I moved up from 17th to 10th in the final two laps of the race. [Video]
Monday October 4 @ 8pm - Monday October 11 @ 8pm.
Formula Renault 2.0 at Lime Rock: I was not looking forward to this race as the week began, I don't like driving Lime Rock to begin with, and running these formula cars on a track where they have lap times under a minute usually means contending with a lot of traffic and a lot of lapped cars that are like having unpredictable wild animals on the track. I ended up having a really good race here, starting 3rd and finishing 3rd, but in a close battle with the 2nd place car for the entire race. We had some close calls with lapped traffic, but survived them. [Video]
Indy Pro at Red Bull Ring (Spielberg, Austria): This race started with a field of only 6 cars, and after the first few laps 3 of them had dropped out and there were only 3 of us left. We gradually separated from one another, but as the race wore on I caught the 2nd place car ahead of me, and we had a close race for most of the second half. I ended up finishing second after that car spun in the slow sharp turn 3 at the top of the hill. [Video]
ARCA at USA International Speedway (Lakeland, Florida): I started 10th and finished 11th as the 16th ranked driver in the field. I let a couple of cars pass me because it looked like they were going to be faster than me (in fact the first one got on the radio and asked me to let him by), but it turned out I kept up with them for the rest of the race. This was a solid run for me in a strong top-split field. [Video]
Monday September 27 @ 8pm - Monday October 4 @ 8pm.
Formula Renault 2.0 at the NĂĽrburgring: The entire field of 15 cars finished on the lead lap in this race, which I don't recall ever happening before in any of my races. I never passed anyone competitively in this race, but 3 cars ahead of me had incidents going off track that let me get past. For the first half of the race there's a battle for position between two cars way ahead of me that you can often see in the video. I was waiting for them to crash into each other and hoping to avoid the wreck that I assumed would happen ahead of me at some point. It happened and I avoided it. I finished 6th after starting 9th. [Video]
ARCA at Darlington, Race 2: This was a good, uneventful race. Darlington is a very difficult track to drive, and having a boring race there is a triumph. I started 10th and finished 11th as the 16th ranked car. [Video]
ARCA at Darlington, Race 1: I started this race on the pole (in first position) and led the first 7 laps, which was fun, and then started to gradually fall back. I should have finished 5th or 6th, which would have been nice, but with 3 laps to go I got into the wall all by myself, and got "meatball flagged" and had to go into the pits. (This is a black flag for damage, and had I not pitted, I'd have been disqualified altogether.) I ended up finishing 12th, one lap down. [Video]
Monday September 20 @ 8pm - Monday September 27 @ 8pm.
Formula Renault 2.0 at Red Bull Ring (Spielberg, Austria): I ran a solid race here until the end of Lap 13, when I spun as I applied brakes in a weird way as we approached a lapped car entering a turn. From laps 2 through 13 I was in P3 close behind the second place car. On lap 5 I got slightly ahead when that driver missed the tight turn 3, but he retook the position before I ever really had it. I got close again on lap 7, and after that I was just following him. He drove a great race, it's not easy to focus on your line and braking with someone close behind you lap after lap. [Video]
ARCA at Phoenix: I had never raced Phoenix before; I've practiced in past seasons but never felt good enough at it to enter a race. This was a pretty boring race, I finished 7th as the 12th-ranked driver in a field of 19. [Video]
Monday September 13 @ 8pm - Monday September 20 @ 8pm.
Formula Renault 2.0 at Imola: I enjoy driving Imola, though I'm not very good at it, I'm 2 or 3 seconds a lap off the pace of the really fast drivers. I ran a solid race here, giving up a lot of positions the first couple of laps as I often do (someone nearly pushed me off track in the fast left-hander at the exit of Tamburello at the start). I finished 8th after starting 11th as the 16th ranked driver in the field. [Video]
ARCA at Kansas Speedway: I did very well on this fast track with a lot of banking. I've learned to save tires at these tracks so that I can be part of the battle at the end of the race. I fell back from the leaders a lot through the first 10 laps as I conserved my front tires, but then I began to reel them back in. This is a fun race to watch if you like oval or stock car racing.
